About Autism
Autism is a spectrum that affects each person differently. It leads to unique strengths and challenges for each individual. Some autistic people can speak, while others are nonverbal or minimally verbal and communicate in other ways. Some have intellectual disabilities, while some do not. Some require significant support in their daily lives, while others need less support and, in some cases, live entirely independently. Many people with autism experience other medical, behavioral or mental health issues that affect their quality of life.
Among the most common co-occurring conditions are:
- Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD)
- Anxiety and depression
- Gastrointestinal (GI) disorders
- Seizures and sleep disorders
Signs and Symptoms
Autism typically appears in early childhood, often before the age of three. The symptoms can include
Social Challenges
Difficulty in engaging in typical social interactions, such as making eye contact, responding to their name, and understanding others’ feelings.
Repetitive Behaviors
Engaging in repetitive movements (hand-flapping, rocking), strict routines, and an intense focus on specific interests or activities by understanding.
Sensory Sensitivities
Over or under sensitivity to sensory inputs like sounds, lights, textures, or tastes. Sensory sensitivities refer to the way a person with autism experiences and responds to sensory input.
